Arduino Portenta kit aims for connectivity and positioning

[ad_1]

Some new Arduino hardware is coming to town, joining the Arduino PRO Portenta family: the Portenta Cat M1/NB IoT GNSS Shield, which is designed to add cellular connectivity and positioning capabilities to Portenta and MKR boards.

It’s aimed at edge computing applications, from agriculture fields to smart city ranges. We’re talking asset tracking and remote monitoring applications.

Unpacking its acronym-soup of a name, GNSS stands for the global navigation satellite system and NB IoT is Narrowband IoT. Finally, Cat M1 is LPWAN cellular comms, for IoT projects with relatively low upload speed requirements…

Costing €73.00/US$87.60, the shield will be available from the Arduino store after launch, 31 January.

Arduino has made the Shield in conjunction with Thales. Arduino highlights:

“Designed with Thales, a world-leading company in trusted IoT connectivity, the Portenta Cat. M1/NB IoT GNSS Shield leverages a Cinterion TX62 (right) wireless IoT module built for highly efficient, low-power IoT applications to deliver optimized communication bandwidth and performance. The new shield indeed further amplifies the opportunities that Arduino clients can seize in the fast-evolving Industry 4.0 and edge computing scenario, with state-of-the-art security, reliability and low power consumption.”

H7

For its part, the spec of the H7 board includes a dual-core Arm Cortex-M7 and Cortex-M4 running at 480MHz and 240MHz respectively, with industrial temperature-range (-40 to 85°C) components. Arduino code runs on top of the Arm Mbed OS open source IoT operating system.

You can read more about it here.

Thales and Arduino will jointly host a Launch Webinar for a more in-depth look at the new kit. It takes place on 23 February 23 (9am and 5pm CET). You can register here.
